Create a conceptual series of posters honoring iconic figures from the worlds of cinema and music who were immensely influential yet deeply controversial during their lifetimes. The challenge was to celebrate their lasting cultural impact while acknowledging the personal and public complexities that defined their eras.
I focused the entire design strategy on the eyes, using a stark, horizontal rectangular frame across each portrait. This motif serves as a visual metaphor: it represents the unique artistic vision they possessed, but also focuses on their humanity, reminding the viewer that behind the criticism were real individuals.
Marilyn Monroe
The text “Oh, Marilyn…” could be interpreted in either a sensual tone, as she’s usually remembered as a “Sex Icon”, or in a sad tone, since Marilyn had a sad life with a tragic ending.
Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury it’s a huge icon in music, but he was very criticised by media and people when rumors about his sexuality and sickness came out. I used the text “Yes, queen” which is a known expression between the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, but it can also be interpreted as a reminder of the name of his rock band “Queen”.
